YOUR DATA
Privacy policy
Last updated October 12, 2026.
SceneChat is a Chrome extension for sharing timestamped reactions to videos. This policy describes what its current email-account version processes.
Accounts and public activity
Firebase Authentication, operated by Google, processes your email address, password, and account authentication. SceneChat does not store your password in its comment database. Your username, reactions, timestamps, likes, and account identifier are stored in Google Cloud Firestore. Reactions and usernames are visible to other signed-in viewers. Your email address is not included in your public profile.
Video detection and scene matching
Detection runs for the active video tab while the SceneChat sidebar is visible and stops shortly after its activity signal ends. The extension reads video-page metadata, player time, duration, and source information in your browser. Video source identifiers are hashed locally; raw source URLs and full page URLs are not sent to the shared comment database. Page identifiers, corrections, blocked-viewer preferences, and catalog results are saved locally in your browser. Recent reactions and matching fingerprints are kept in bounded session memory to reduce repeated requests.
When signed in, SceneChat sends catalog/content identifiers and scene timestamps to Firestore to load reactions. For verified accounts, it may contribute compact fingerprints from readable video frames or visible subtitle cues, together with their timestamps and your account identifier, to help align copies. Subtitle text is normalized and hashed locally. Video-frame fingerprints are small perceptual hashes. Raw frames, audio, video files, and raw subtitle text are not uploaded.
For automatic title lookup, the detected title, release year, and episode details may be sent to TVmaze or Wikidata. Lookups occur for a detected video rather than for every page you browse. These catalog providers may receive your IP address as part of ordinary network requests.
Conversation starters
Quiet timeline segments may contain original, general questions labeled as SceneChat starters. They are not viewer comments or descriptions generated from your video. All displayed likes come from viewer actions. Two starter records and an anonymous segment marker are stored once per timeline segment. A private account-linked timestamp and segment key limit repeated creation; this activity record is removed when you delete your account. Shared starter records and their anonymous markers remain for other viewers. No video, captions, or account details are sent to an AI provider for this feature. You can hide starters through their options menu.
Reports and safety
Reports contain the reporting account identifier, reaction identifier, reason, and time. They are accessible to the reporter and project operators through administrative access. Hidden-viewer preferences are stored locally. Posting intervals, verification requirements, and ownership rules help limit misuse.
Purpose, storage, and providers
These records are used to provide accounts, reactions, likes, matching, and moderation. SceneChat does not sell this data, use it for advertising, or collect a general browsing history. Reactions are user communications; playback timestamps, likes, and reports are activity needed for the reaction feed and community controls. Firebase Authentication processes IP addresses for account security and abuse prevention. Catalog services receive ordinary network IP addresses with requests. SceneChat does not request GPS or precise device location. Firebase/Google may process infrastructure logs and security information under their own policies. The Firestore database is configured in Toronto; authentication, delivery infrastructure, and catalog services may process information in other locations. See Firebase’s privacy and security information for provider processing and retention.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
SceneChat’s use and transfer of user data adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. Data is used to provide or improve the disclosed accounts, timestamped reactions, matching, and community controls. Transfers are limited to providing these features, necessary security and abuse investigations, and complying with applicable law. User data is not used or transferred for personalized advertising, lending, or creditworthiness decisions. Project operators access nonpublic user data only with the user’s specific consent for support, when necessary for security or abuse investigations, to comply with law, or as aggregated and anonymized data for internal operations.
Your controls and deletion
You can delete your own reactions through their options menu. The account menu includes permanent account deletion, which removes your profile, reactions, likes, reports, contributed matching fingerprints, and authentication account. Deletion requires your password. If interrupted, sign in and repeat deletion to finish. Removing the extension clears access to websites but does not automatically delete your hosted account.
Retention and account security
Your account and contributed records remain stored until you delete them, or project operators remove them for moderation or service administration. Local preferences remain until you clear extension storage or remove the extension. SceneChat has no advertising or analytics trackers. New passwords must contain 8–128 characters; longer unique passwords or passphrases are encouraged. Email verification is required to post or like, and private profile records are readable only by their account owner through the extension. Administrative access is limited to project operators. These protections reduce risks but cannot guarantee that an online service will never experience a security incident.
